Valerian
Scientific name: Valeriana offcinalis
Valeriana offcinalis, a flowering plant, which has been widely used to treat sleep disturbances.
Traditional use for:
•Mental relaxation
•Aid to natural sleep
Well-established use for:
•Mild nervous tensions
•Difficulty if falling asleep
Valerian stimulates the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and inhibits the enzymatic breakdown of GABA. Valerian possibly blocks, and reverses, the reuptake of GABA, thus leading to high concentration of GABA in synaptic cleft. Valerian may as well act as a precursor of GABA synthesis.
Valepotriates has been shown to confer anxiolytic effects on psychic symptoms of anxiety. Also, it has been effective in reducing sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep) and improving sleep quality and efficiency among insomniacs.
Clinical studies have indicated the effectiveness of valerian approximately identical to diazepam and chlorpromazine.
Passion Flower Fruit
Scientific name: Passifora incarnata
It is stated to have sedative, hypnotic, antispasmodic and anodyne properties.
Passifora incarnata is used in folk medicine as anxiolytic and sedative for anxiety and insomnia symptoms, also applied in neuralgia, generalized seizure, hysteria, nervous tachycardia, spasmodic asthma.
The exact mechanism of passion flower on reducing anxiety is unknown, though inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO) and activating receptors of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) may play an important role.
Inhibition of MAO causes the accumulation of endogenous catecholamines (serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine) in the brain. This explains the possible antidepressant mechanism of passifora incarnata
Oral, take 1 tablet 1-2 hours before sleep or consult with your physician.
Contraindications
No contraindications have been reported to date.
Interaction
Please consult with your physician in case you take medications causing sleepiness or drowsiness.
